General Questions About Dental Implants
Let’s start with some of the basics patients want to understand before moving forward with treatment.
Why are dental implants considered the gold standard for tooth replacement?
Dental implants are considered the gold standard for tooth replacement because they replace both the tooth root and the crown, giving you a result that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
What are the benefits of dental implants compared to bridges or dentures?
Dental implants offer several benefits over bridges and dentures, including greater stability, easier daily care, and long-term protection for your jawbone. Because implants stand independently, they do not require altering healthy neighboring teeth the way a traditional bridge does, and they stay securely in place rather than shifting or slipping like a removable denture can.
How long do dental implants last?
With proper care, dental implants can last 20 years or longer, and many patients keep them for life.
Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Every patient’s oral health history is different, so we evaluate candidacy on an individual basis before recommending treatment.
Can smokers receive dental implants?
Smokers can often receive dental implants, though smoking does increase the risk of complications and can slow healing after surgery. Nicotine restricts blood flow to the gums and jawbone, which may affect how well the implant fuses with the bone during osseointegration.
Can I get dental implants if I have diabetes or another medical condition?
Patients with diabetes or other medical conditions can often be good candidates for dental implants, particularly when the condition is well managed. Stable blood sugar levels support healing, so we work closely with patients to understand their overall health before recommending treatment. Other conditions, such as autoimmune disorders or a history of radiation therapy, may also affect candidacy and healing time.
Will I need bone grafting before implant placement?
Some patients need bone grafting before implant placement, particularly if the jawbone has thinned due to tooth loss, gum disease, or long-term denture wear. A bone graft adds volume and density to the area so the implant has a stable foundation to fuse with. Not every patient needs this step, and we determine whether grafting is necessary using a 3D scan of your jaw during your consultation.
Preparing for Dental Implant Surgery
Knowing what to expect ahead of time can help you feel more at ease on the day of your procedure.
How should I prepare for implant surgery?
We will give you specific instructions beforehand, which may include adjusting certain medications, arranging a ride home, and planning to take it easy for the rest of the day. Eating a light meal before your appointment, unless instructed otherwise, and wearing comfortable clothing can also help the day go smoothly.
Will I receive sedation during the procedure?
Whether you receive sedation during your procedure depends on the type of surgery you need and your personal comfort level. Options can range from local anesthesia alone to additional forms of sedation for patients who feel anxious or are having more involved procedures.
How long does dental implant surgery take?
Dental implant surgery typically takes about one to two hours per implant, though the exact time depends on how many implants are being placed and whether additional procedures, such as bone grafting, are needed at the same time. More complex cases, including full arch restorations, may take longer.
Dental Implant Recovery & Healing
Recovery looks a little different for everyone, but understanding the general timeline for dental implant recovery can help you feel prepared.
Is dental implant surgery painful?
Most patients report mild to moderate discomfort after dental implant surgery rather than significant pain, and this is generally well managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Some soreness, swelling, or bruising in the days following surgery is normal and typically improves within a week.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery takes about one to two weeks, though full healing and integration of the implant with the jawbone can take several months. Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days, while more strenuous activity is typically paused for a bit longer.
Caring for Dental Implants
Good daily habits help protect your implants and support your oral health for years to come.
How do I clean dental implants?
Dental implants are cleaned much like natural teeth, with twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, and regular checkups and cleanings at our office.
Do implants get cavities?
The implant itself cannot get a cavity, since it is made of titanium rather than natural tooth material. However, the crown attached to the implant can still accumulate plaque, and the surrounding gum tissue can be affected by bacteria if it is not cleaned properly.
Can dental implants develop gum disease?
Dental implants can develop a condition called peri-implantitis, which is similar to gum disease and affects the tissue and bone surrounding the implant. It is typically caused by a buildup of bacteria and can lead to inflammation, discomfort, or bone loss around the implant if left untreated.
